Here’s another great example of how the Cellometer instruments are used to test viability of cells prior to plating.

Standard therapy zoledronic acid (ZA) is typically used for metastatic bone disease in breast cancer patients, but it’s mechanism of action is not clear. Here, Turkish scientists investigated zoledronic acid with and without serine-threonine inhibitors in human MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells. Cellometer was used in combination with tryan blue to assess cell viability prior to plating. After plating, the cells were treated with various combinations of therapeutic agents. ZA with either one of the serine-threonine inhibitors examined proved more effective than any single agent in both cell lines and correlated with a block of the PI3K/Akt pathway. These studies provide a better understanding of this drug’s mechanism of action and how that might be enhanced to improve efficacy for cancer patients.

Many researchers prefer an automated cell counter to perform even simple viability assays with Trypan Blue for the consistency and speed they offer. It also removes a large component of potential human error or bias. To learn more about our Cellometer automated systems, contact us at info@nexcelom.com or visit our website.
